«The 200th Anniversary of the Exodus is an entire commemorative year» – Spyridon Diamantopoulos, Mayor of the Sacred City of Messolonghi

In 1826, Messolonghi did not surrender. It did not choose the path of survival at any cost, but the path of dignity. The Exodus was not merely a defining episode of the Greek War of Independence; it was a conscious moral stance and an act of collective responsibility. That is why, two centuries later, it remains a global symbol of freedom, self-sacrifice, and human dignity.

The 200th Anniversary of the Exodus is an entire commemorative year. The official opening at the Athens Concert Hall, with the participation of leading cultural institutions, underscores that the Bicentennial is a national cause. In Messolonghi itself, the commemorative year takes on substance through powerful, highly symbolic moments that connect the historical past with the present. The reenactment of the Battle of Kleisova, the events at the Garden of Heroes, and the March 25 anniversary parade stand alongside major spiritual and artistic milestones.

The arrival of the revered icon of the Virgin Mary “Axion Esti,” the hosting of emblematic works of national memory—such as Eugène Delacroix’s Greece on the Ruins of Missolonghi and Theodoros Vryzakis’s original painting on the Exodus—highlight the enduring and international resonance of this sacrifice. At the same time, major sporting events, as well as the institutional establishment of the Sacred City of Messolonghi Gastronomy Festival, connect cultural identity with contemporary outward-looking growth and development.

Particular emphasis is placed on the scholarly documentation of memory. In October 2026, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of Patras, in cooperation with our Municipality, will host a high-level International Historical Conference titled: “Two Hundred Years since the Exodus of Messolonghi: History, Memory, Heritage.”

Within the same framework is a project of exceptional historical significance: the complete translation and scholarly processing of archival material related to Messolonghi from Ottoman, American, and European archives, with Greek translations and academic editorial oversight.

The commemorative year, however, does not remain anchored in the past. In Messolonghi, the Forum of Universality and Freedom is being established as an international, non-profit institution headquartered in the Sacred City. Its founding meeting focuses on themes such as climate change, environmental justice, and human rights, with the aim of positioning Messolonghi as a place for contemporary international dialogue.

The anniversary program is the result of collaboration between the Municipality of the Sacred City of Messolonghi and the State, the Region, the Church, universities, institutional and civic bodies, and the Greek diaspora. Because the Exodus was never an individual act. It was a collective decision and a collective responsibility. And that journey concerns us all.
