In the very heart of winter, a getaway to Greece’s mountain villages is pure magic… Join us, as we explore the winter spots inspired by our love of snow — to carve turns with skis or a snowboard on powdery slopes, or simply to enjoy an airy chairlift ride and a hot chocolate at a slope-side chalet.

Experience the Magic of Helmos at the Kalavryta Ski Resort

The town of Kalavryta
The mountain town of historic Kalavryta, with its stone-built houses, is perched at an altitude of 750 m on the slopes of imposing Mount Helmos. The main pedestrian street—home to most shops and tavernas—is the ideal place for a stroll.

The central square, with its centuries-old plane trees, the bell tower of the metropolitan church, and the busts of the 1821 heroes, offers a serene spot to unwind. Kalavryta combines natural beauty, historical interest, and outdoor activities—and it’s a genuine gastronomic paradise, ideal for every traveler.

At the Kalavryta Ski Resort
Helmos’ peaks blend steep, exhilarating faces with superb groomed runs and highly enjoyable freeride routes. The resort ranks among the most popular winter destinations in Greece—and increasingly abroad—and is already gearing up for the new season with fresh activities on the program.

It continues to evolve with a view to a dynamic, year-round presence: hosting international events, promoting sports and tourism development, and cultivating environmental awareness among visitors. Recent upgrades underline this new era, including the “Achilleas” gondola and the “Styga” lift, while the resort offers outdoor activities beyond the ski season as well.

A winter escape to remember

The village of Arachova
The moment we arrived in Arachova, I felt a different air—crisp and clean—rolling down from Liakoura’s peak. The village is picture-perfect: cobbled lanes, stone mansions, little shops with local products, and a lively main street that buzzes late into the night.

We wandered the alleys, sipped mulled wine by the fireplace, and forgot the world for a while. Dinner was unforgettable—traditional dishes, local cheeses and meats, and gourmet cuisine in elegant restaurants. And when night fell… Arachova never sleeps: music, laughter, drinks—we danced until dawn.

Parnassos Ski Resort
The next morning we headed for the mountain. Parnassos Ski Resort is vast—it can welcome more than 4,500 skiers per day—and it has everything: parking, equipment rental shops, a nursery, a first-aid station, and chalets with breathtaking views. We rode the four-seater “Aphrodite” gondola up to chic Kellaria, at 1,950 m. Most runs start here and reach up to 2,245 m—easy, intermediate, and more demanding options for every level in the group.

A few kilometers away, at Fterolakka, the famous black No. 6 run awaits thrill-seekers. For the most experienced skiers, Gerontovrachos on Parnassos’ southern slopes offers powerful terrain and the most authentic mountain experience. By midday we were in the beautifully designed three-storey chalet at Kellaria, hot chocolate in hand, gazing across the entire mountain.

Slalom on Velouchi – Karpenissi / Mount Velouchi
Energized in a natural paradise

The town of Karpenissi
Evrytania is lavishly endowed by nature: dense forests of fir, plane, and chestnut, lively rivers, and deep, shaded gorges. Its picture-book villages nestle on verdant slopes, built of stone and timber, with proud mountains all around—Kaliakouda, Chelidona, and the Agrafa range.

Above Karpenissi, the regional capital, rises Velouchi, home to the well-organized Velouchi Ski Center. We woke early, enjoyed a hearty traditional breakfast, and drove up the slopes of Tymfristos toward the resort—just 10 km from Karpenissi—through scenery so beautiful it dissolves city stress.

At the Velouchi Ski Center
Elevations range from 1,840 m to 2,315 m at the summit. In front of us: 15 high-standard pistes for all abilities. Snowboarders can enjoy a well-set snowboard park, while adrenaline lovers choose among five off-piste routes to send their pulse soaring.

And of course, you can simply float above the runs on the “Takis Flegas” chairlift… then warm up with hot chocolate or coffee at the chalet. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch one of the resort’s special evening events.
