Protecting Your Skin from the Sun

Proper awareness, choosing the right sunscreen, and understanding your skin phototype are the fundamental steps in preventing photoaging and the damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Sunlight can have a positive effect on our mental well-being and contributes to the production of vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and the prevention of conditions such as osteoporosis.

However, particularly during the months when solar radiation is most intense, it is important to remember that, beyond providing a beautiful tan, the sun can also cause a range of skin changes associated with premature aging. The harmful effects of sun exposure do not appear immediately.

On the contrary, they may become evident even 10 to 20 years later, leading many people to underestimate the risks associated with exposure to UVA radiation (320–400 nm wavelength) and UVB radiation (290–320 nm wavelength).

The Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation. Both UVA and UVB rays are responsible for skin aging, as they affect the cells responsible for producing elastin and collagen.

As a result, they contribute to premature aging, wrinkles, dryness, spider veins, brown spots, and hyperpigmentation. In addition, they penetrate deep into the skin, increasing the risk of developing conditions such as photoallergic reactions, rosacea, skin cancer, and systemic lupus erythematosus.

The Importance of Proper Sun Protection. The sunscreen products we use at every stage of life should provide:

  • Long-lasting and consistent sun protection.
  • Protection against photoimmunosuppression and photoaging.
  • Protection of the DNA of skin cells while preserving their normal function.
  • Protection against environmental aggressors.

The key to protecting our skin lies, first and foremost, in understanding the risks associated with both excessive and moderate sun exposure, as well as recognizing the specific needs of our skin, which are influenced by factors such as skin phototype, skin color, and age.

Skin Phototype and SPF. In Greece, the most common skin phototypes are Type II, which always develops erythema (sunburn) after sun exposure and may sometimes tan, and Type III, which always tans and only occasionally develops erythema. Knowing our skin phototype helps us choose the appropriate Sun Protection Factor (SPF). SPF indicates how long we can remain in the sun without developing erythema compared to unprotected skin.

For example, if someone normally develops sunburn after 10 minutes of sun exposure, using an SPF 15 sunscreen extends the safe exposure time to approximately 150 minutes. It is also important to know that sunscreens with an SPF higher than 50 do not offer significantly greater protection (98%) than SPF 30 (95%). For this reason, they are generally not considered substantially more beneficial.

Post-Sun Skin Care. It is advisable to avoid tanning products that intensify the effects of solar radiation without providing protection, such as baby oil. Instead, after-sun products are beneficial for soothing and repairing the skin following irritation caused by sun exposure. It is equally important not to neglect the use of UV protection products for the hair and SPF lip balms, as the lips contain very little melanin and therefore have limited natural protection against the sun.
