Ioannis Siotos – Mayor of Tinos
Tinos is considered the capital of religious tourism in Greece. The sacred temple of Panagia of Tinos is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in the country (a landmark) and in the entire Orthodox world. So, apart from those who visit the island for tourism purposes, which are not few, there are many who come with deep faith and devotion, seeking the help and protection of Panagia. At the same time, the coexistence of the Orthodox and Catholic elements on the island has shaped a unique personality and culture and has influenced our tradition and cultural heritage, attracting thousands of travelers every year who want to experience this special holiday.
In recent years, the image of the island has changed through systematic efforts. Our goal is to invite travelers to discover the unexplored Tinos through experiential alternative tourism. To get to know the 52 traditional villages, to connect with the unique nature of the island through activities such as hiking, cycling, climbing, or water sports. To get to know the “Muse of the Aegean” that inspires our vacations. This effort is made in collaboration with the tourism authorities and professionals of the island, and I believe that collaboration and coexistence make our communication more effective. Furthermore, we have invested in the development of experiential sports and gastronomy. The Tinos Running Experience and Tinos Food Paths are two initiatives supported by the Municipality that gather many participants from Greece and abroad every year. Here, I should also mention the organized network of 13 thematic trails that bring visitors closer to the authentic Tinos. All activities are not just sports-related. They include events introducing local cuisine, culture, and traditions of Tinos. We strive to satisfy all the senses of our visitors to create pleasant memories for their holidays.
Potentially, Tinos can be part of a thematic island-hopping experience in the Cyclades. A complete gastronomic experience provided that the necessary collaborations and infrastructure are in place.
Tinos, in general, is a love affair, and every day is a day trip. You cannot explore Tinos in just one or two days. It is a lively island that has visitors both in summer and winter, with an amazing culture, outstanding cuisine within its mainland, scattered villages that are truly like small gems, its beaches, and above all, its people. They are hospitable, warm, and islanders!
