The renowned international sculptor Mara Karetsos moves between art, culture, and philanthropy with the quiet strength of a creator who has devoted her life to giving lasting form to ideas. Through the “Mara Karetsos Center for Culture & Science,” she has created an organization that brings together creativity, education, and public dialogue, supporting initiatives that span the arts, literature, science, architecture, and music. In this interview, she speaks about her vision, the values that continue to guide her work, and why culture and scientific thought remain essential to the way she sees the future.

As the founder of the “Mara Karetsos Center for Culture & Science” how do you see the relationship between art, culture, and scientific thought?

I founded the “Mara Karetsos Center for Culture & Science” with a deep belief that culture, art, and scientific thought are not separate worlds, but connected forces that shape the way we understand life and society. For me, art gives form to emotion and imagination, while science offers structure, discovery, and progress. When these fields come together, they can inspire people in powerful ways. Together we transform concepts into actionable goals for the community and connect ideas with artists, writers and scientists.

What was the original vision and how has that vision evolved over time?

The original vision of the center was to create a nonprofit organization that would support talented individuals through grands, charitable activities, and educational support. Today, the Center supports initiatives in academic development, professional growth, leadership, and, at times, health and wellness. Our mission has always been to empower young and driven individuals by giving them encouragement, opportunity, and the support they need to achieve their dreams.

Can you tell us about some of the events the Center has supported?

Since 2022, the center has proudly supported a range of events and programs. These have included tributes to Bob Dylan and Elton John, lectures connected to NASA, programs focused on Medicine and Science, Art and Auction lectures, and literary gatherings with academicians, university writers, and journalists from Greece and Italy. Each initiative has been designed to bring people together across disciplines and to create meaningful dialogue between culture, knowledge, and public life.

Are there new initiatives or projects currently in development?

Several new initiatives are planned for 2026. These include a Festival for Books and Art, a series of Architecture lectures, Science lectures, and a Classical Music Festival. I believe the role of culture and science will become even more important in the next decade. We are living in a time of rapid change, and society needs both inspiration and knowledge. Together, they can guide the next generation toward a more thoughtful and creative future.

You divide your life between Greece and the United States. How do this life style influence your creativity and thoughts?

I travel all my life throughout Europe, and Asia for exhibitions since 1973, working with important galleries such as Paul Facchetti in France, Alexander Iolas in the United States and Europe, and Art Point Gallery in Tokyo. Dividing my life between Greece and the United States has deeply influenced my creativity and perspective. Each place has shaped me differently. Greece gives me history, depth, and emotional connection, while America gives me energy, openness, and momentum.

What has been the most meaningful reward of your work so far?

The most rewarding part of my work has been seeing people believe in themselves and grow through the opportunities they are given. My motto has always been: «Believe — believe in your work and in your dreams!»
